Not-for-Profit Governance and Performance Study webinar

    Current

The AICD’s Not-for-Profit Governance and Performance Study, is now in its eighth year. The study, conducted via an online survey and through focus groups across Australia, highlights not just the challenges facing this very diverse sector, but also explores some of the opportunities available to organisations during a time of massive change.

This year, the study examined how NFPs are building foundations for long-term success. It explored issues of organisational culture, risk and reputation management, and the challenge of financial sustainability.

On 20 September at 2.30pm AEST, esteemed NFP director Penny Knight MAICD and AICD NFP Sector Leader Phil Butler GAICD will host a member complimentary webinar to run through the findings of this year’s study, pulling out practical insights to help directors of NFPs in their roles.

Throughout September and October, Phil Butler will also be hosting events around Australia, giving directors the opportunity to meet to discuss the findings of the study and the challenges they are currently facing.

    Cyber for Directors pilot

Managing cyber risk and strategically thinking about digital innovation is now central to the role of a director. The information age requires boards to stay on top of the cyber challenges faced by their organisations.

Advances in information technology, big data, automation and connectivity provide a multitude of opportunities for organisations to innovate, increase productivity and provide better targeted services to customers. At the same time, risks including phishing threats, malware and data breaches are proliferating. Directors need to not only be aware of what’s happening now in cyber governance, they need frameworks for how their boards and organisations can manage cyber as the landscape rapidly evolves.

Offered exclusively to members, the new AICD course Cyber for Directors prepares directors, executives and chief information officers to oversee cyber risk and protect an organisation’s data, without stifling opportunities for innovation.

The three-day program, facilitated by experts in cyber governance, provides participants with an up-to-date overview of the main terms and concepts related to cyber, outlines the roles and responsibilities of the board when it comes to overseeing cyber, gives directors a grounding in cyber strategy, and helps them identify the threats and opportunities their organisations are facing.

Promoting cultural diversity in the boardroom

In August, AICD chairman Elizabeth Proust AO FAICD and The Hon Bruce Atkinson MLC, president of the Legislative Council of Victoria, hosted a cocktail function at Victoria’s iconic Parliament House.

Well attended by Victoria’s Asian business diaspora and members of parliament, the event focussed on the importance of cultural diversity in Australia’s boardrooms.

The event highlighted the significant role of cultural diversity within the AICD’s membership in strengthening our ability to achieve excellence in governance and to make a positive impact on our society and the economy.

“While the focus of our work has so far been weighted towards the need to achieve greater gender diversity in Australia’s boardrooms, there is no doubt that cultural diversity is vital for Australian businesses, and not just those operating on a global stage,” Proust said.

Despite being a very proud multicultural society, Australia often does not see cultural diversity being reflected in the most senior echelons of our organisations and institutions. “Australia is a part of Asia and our boardrooms need to break through what is often called the ‘bamboo ceiling’ to reflect that,” Proust said.
