Scholarships to support legacy of Invictus Games Sydney 2018

The Invictus Games Sydney 2018 provides an opportunity to make a long-term impact for the defence community by supporting programs and services to encourage greater collaboration and co-operation amongst the veteran and serving community.

The Scholarships offered by the AICD launched during the week of the Invictus Games will be a part of this tangible legacy.

These scholarships will enable eight serving or former Australian military personnel who are actively involved in a not-for-profit organisation to undertake the widely-respected three-day Foundations of Directorship course.

Scholarship applications will open early November.

AICD Managing Director & CEO Angus Armour said that volunteering through a not-for-profit was one way of finding a sense of purpose after service.

“Our service personnel have already demonstrated their commitment to our community, so it makes sense that after leaving the armed forces many want to find new ways to contribute,” he said.

“Two-thirds of the AICD’s 43,000-strong membership play some role in the not-for-profit sector, so improving and ensuring the long-term governance of the sector through scholarships programs such as this one is a key focus.

“By helping enhance the skills and governance understanding among leaders in the not-for-profit sector, we can help them ensure that their not-for-profits are best placed to play their vital role in the community.”

Invictus Games Sydney 2018 CEO Patrick Kidd OBE welcomed the scholarship package.

“Leadership is an inherent quality of those who serve in the ADF, meaning current or former ADF members are ideally positioned to make a valuable contribution in the NFP sector,” he said.

“Serving in leadership roles in the not-for-profit sector provides our service personnel a pathway to integrating back into the community while also feeling a sense of contribution through service.

“Many have made the move, or are thinking about making the move, from a military driven service environment to a community service environment. I’d encourage those individuals to apply for the Foundations of Directorship Scholarship program.”
