Chair, Royal Flying Doctors Service Western Australia

Sam Walsh is a Non-Executive Director of Mitsui & Co (Japan) and Ma’aden Mining (Saudi Arabia) , and Chair of Gold Corporation (Australia), the Perth Mint, the Accenture Global Mining Council (UK), the Australian Council for the Arts, the Perth Diocesan Trust, and the Royal Flying Doctor Service (WA Ops).  

Sam was Rio Tinto plc & Ltd chief executive, from January 2013 to July 2016, when he retired after a 25-year career with the international mining group.  

Sam started his career in the automotive industry, working for 20 years in senior leadership roles with General Motors and Nissan Australia.   

Sam has played a key role in charity, community and business associations in Australia and the United Kingdom.  In recognition of his distinguished service to the mining industry and the community of Western Australia, Sam was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in 2010.

He was awarded Western Australia Citizen of the Year (Industry and Commerce) in 2007.  

Sam is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Management, the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, the Australian Institute of Company Directors, the UK Institute of Directors, the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply, the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering and was previously Treasurer of the International Council on Mining and Metals.   

He has a Bachelor of Commerce from Melbourne University and has completed a Fellowship Program at Kettering University in Michigan. He has Honorary Doctorates from UWA and ECU.

He has been awarded Graduate of Distinction, Life Time Achievement Award University of Melbourne, Honorary Fellowship Melbourne Business School, AusIMM Institute Medal and is a former Visiting Fellow at Oxford University.

Chief Executive Officer, Royal Flying Doctors Service Western Australia

Rebecca Tomkinson is the Chief Executive Officer of the Royal Flying Doctor Service (Western Operations). Rebecca is accountable for the sustainability and success of an iconic

WA organisation that provides life-saving aero medical and primary health services to the people of Western Australia. 

Rebecca brings a highly strategic, broad sector lens and strong executive experience to her role. Her professional contributions include leading transformational change, building sustainable business models, government relations, strategic policy development and stakeholder engagement. 

Rebecca has held advisory roles across a number of sectors and is deeply committed to the development of regional Western Australia – where she was raised and educated. 

Rebecca is actively involved in building community and business capability. She chairs the Regional Development Council, is the Chair of the Wheatbelt Development

Commission, serves on the Senate of Murdoch University and is the WA President of the CEDA State Advisory Board. She holds qualifications in community development, public policy and social impact.

The Rottnest Forum has been etched in the calendars of the WA Business community for 45 years.

The ability to blend the naturally relaxed pace of the island with a keynote address and ample networking opportunities has been the formula of success for this event.

We are delighted to confirm the speakers for this year’s Forum is the Chair and Chief Executive Officer of the Royal Flying Doctor Services Western Australia, Sam Walsh AO FAICD and Rebecca Tomkinson MAICD respectively. The pair will be discussing the importance of having an innovative strategic outlook and the critical role the organisation has played during the Covid-19 Pandemic.
