Phil Butler GAICD

Phil Butler GAICD

Sector Leader, Not-for-Profit, AICD

Based in Canberra, Phil is the Not-for-Profit Sector Leader for the AICD. This role aims to support organisations in the NFP sector to achieve their respective missions through ongoing improvements in governance and to build greater awareness of the contribution of NFP directors and support their ongoing professional development. Examples of this work include the Good Governance Principles and Guidance for NFP Organisations and the annual NFP Governance and Performance Study.

Prior to taking on this role, he was Manager NFP, Public Sector & ACT for AICD which involved managing the activities and membership of the division and having a focus on the key sectors within ACT.

Phil’s careers spans Private, Public and Not for Profit sectors, including senior roles with Reed Elsevier, the Institute of Chartered Accountants and with the Australian Bureau of Statistics early in his career.

His board and committee roles have included various school and sporting organisations, and most recently as a director of Pro Musica and as a member of the Canberra Institute of Technology Advisory Council.

In addition to successfully completing the Company Directors Course, he completed AICD’s Mastering the Boardroom program and is a regular speaker at conferences and briefings across Australia.

The NFP sector is going through a time of extraordinary change. With such change comes significant opportunity along with some major challenges for directors and executives to manage.

This event offers an opportunity for NFP business leaders to discuss the latest trends and challenges facing the sector and hear from experienced local directors and executives about how they are navigating these changes.

Now in its 7 th year, the NFP Governance and Performance Study is the most comprehensive source of information on the governance of NFPs in Australia. Phil Butler GAICD, AICD’s NFP Sector Leader, will introduce the key themes emerging from the 2017 study and will be joined by a panel of local leading experts to discuss the board’s role in setting and overseeing an organisation’s culture, embedding the organisation’s risk appetite and managing its reputational risk, adapting to the changing business environment, and building its financial strength to ensure ongoing sustainability.
