First National President of the Australian Institute of Company Directors

Sir Eric Neal AC CVO, studied engineering at the South Australian School of Mines, an antecedent institution of UniSA, he had a successful career in industry, became a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers Australia and went on to serve as CEO of Boral for fourteen years. He was also a Director of John Fairfax Ltd, BHP, Coca-Cola Amatil and AMP; and Chairperson of Westpac, Metal Manufacturers and Atlas Copco (Australia).Sir Eric was Chief Commissioner of the City of Sydney in 1987-88, and was Governor of South Australia from 1996 to 2001, becoming the first businessman appointed to the viceregal office. In March 2002 he became the Chancellor of Flinders University. He holds Honorary Doctorates from the University of Sydney, the University of South Australia and Flinders University.

For his contributions to business, he received a knighthood in 1982, appointment as a Companion in the Order of Australia in 1988, and the United States Department of Defence Medal for distinguished public service in 1992.

In 2014 as a recommendation from the Premier of South Australia, Jay Weatherill MP to Her Majesty The Queen he was accorded ‘the Honourable’ title for life.

The Hon Sir Eric Neal was the first National President of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and is one of two Life Member’s of the SA&NT Division.

Past National President of the Australian Institute of Company Directors

Richard Fidock AO started his career in the State and Federal public service, before entering public accounting. He served as a partner of the fore-runner firm of KPMG, before retiring from that firm in 1969.

Since then, he has served as Past National President and is a Life Member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, as well as Past State President and a Life Member of the South Australian Institute of Management. Other appointments include serving as Chairman for Adelaide Bank for 20 years, as well as numerous board appointments for many state and national companies.

In 2004, Richard was awarded the Officer of the Order of Australia for service to finance, business and management sectors and to the community through heritage, cultural, service, youth and sporting organisations.

Richard has an interest in sailing and has competed in 17 Sydney to Hobart yacht races.

Drawing upon their distinguished careers spanning more than a century combined, Sir Eric and Richard will be interviewed in an on-the-couch style session, reflecting on the challenges and achievements in their career and providing insights into what the top priorities are for all boards and directors.

We are honoured to have both these esteemed SA leaders as Australian Institute of Company Directors ambassadors, recognised as Life Fellows they have been members of AICD for over 40 years.

At this intimate lunch, under Chatham House Rule, our Life Fellows will share their director journeys in obtaining various board appointments, things they have learned along the way, great achievements, and the various pitfalls they have encountered.
