Gavin is an experienced technologist and business leader with a career spanning over 30 years in international consultancy and executive corporate roles across a diverse range of industry sectors, working in Europe, North America, Asia and Australia. He holds a diploma in Company Direction from the UK Institute of Directors and is a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Directors.

During the 80’s and 90’s he founded and established a successful IT Consulting company, after an initial period learning his trade at a ‘big four’ consultancy. Gavin led the wave of new technologies such as Decision Support and Executive Information in the 80’s and throughout the ‘90’s he again led the way with internet and advanced networking technologies - including a number of ‘world first’ client implementations for, amongst others, Oracle and Microsoft.

As the first CTO for one of the world’s largest insurers, Aviva, leading 6000 IT staff and $1b IT budget, and as Executive General Manager for Business Technology Solutions at Suncorp, in Brisbane, he was responsible for leading business innovation through technology.

Gavin was also CTO at Hollard Insurance, in Sydney, where he pioneered the first Australian cloud technology strategy with APRA regulatory approval. Gavin also spearheaded the case for a direct undersea fibre optic cable connection to the Sunshine Coast, having lobbied every layer of government for 7 years, the project will finally complete in 2020.

Gavin is currently the CEO for Search365 an innovative Australian start-up company involved in deploying mission critical search and AI solutions aimed at Financial Services, and National Security. Gavin is regularly invited to speak at industry conferences and has published articles on his leading-edge perspectives. He is an Adjunct Senior Fellow at the University of the Sunshine Coast, plus one of the founders, in 2007, of the Australian Government Digital Careers Program.

Artificial Intelligence is already around us and organisations will play a significant role in its development and the impact it can have in our society.

If the media headlines are to be believed, then you could be forgiven for thinking that there are two main trends in Artificial Intelligence (AI).

A powerful tool with the potential to solve many problems in our society; or it is a peril that should be taken into consideration very carefully.

As boards of directors gain awareness of the importance of understanding AI, more companies are starting to use it (for example, chatbots are being used for customer service and robo-advisors), but the opportunities of AI go far beyond such use.

Join us as we hear from Gavin Keeley GAICD, who will discuss the strategic risks boards need to consider with regards to AI, Machine Learning and Robotics. He will then join panellists from local businesses who have had experience deploying AI in their organisations.

What will I take away from this session:

 •  Best practices: How AI was used in a particular situation, resulting in a benefit for the company (it can be in terms of profits, but also brand recognition, benefits for employees or for the environment etc)
 •  Better understanding of the differences between AI, Machine Learning and Robotics
 •  Examples of pitfalls/failures and lessons learnt from them: When AI did not work as expected and what the consequences were for the company
 •  Guidelines and principles: A basic guide to ensure the application of AI in a conscious and ethical way.
 •  Red flags and alert signs for a company to take into consideration.
