Richard Smith-Bingham

Director, Emerging Risks at Marsh & McLennan Advantage, Insights

Based in London, Richard leads the emerging risks agenda for Marsh & McLennan Advantage, Insights, which has him exploring trends and disruptions in the macro-level risk landscape and advising companies and governments on how to better anticipate and respond to new complex threats.

It is a role that enables him to align a thirst for spotting weak signals of new trends and possible game-changing dislocations with his consulting background in Oliver Wyman helping multinationals negotiate the interface between strategy and risk to manage earnings volatility.

He publishes widely, is a frequent speaker at conferences, and often participates in projects run by multilateral bodies and non-governmental organizations. He also runs BRINK, a digital content platform collaboratively produced by Marsh & McLennan and Atlantic 57 that posts a new article each day.

Publication topics include geopolitics, social instability, cyber risk, energy sector challenges and sustainability, emerging risk anticipation, corporate risk appetite, reputation risk, and risk culture.

He sits on the Advisory Board of the World Economic Forum Global Risks Report and is a Steering Group member of the OECD’s High-Level Risk Forum, which focuses on country-level risk governance arrangements.

Prior to joining MMC, Richard led the policy and research agenda for NESTA, the UK’s innovation agency. He has a BA from Oxford and a PhD from University College London.

Hervé Lemahieu

Director, Asian Power and Diplomacy Program, Lowy Institute

His work analyses and quantifies shifts in the geo-economics, military balance, and diplomatic networks of Asia.

Among other projects, Hervé leads the research for the annual Asia Power Index – launched by the Institute in 2018 – which is a data-driven assessment he developed to map the changing distribution of power in the region.

He joined Lowy from the London-based International Institute for Strategic Studies where he was Research Associate for Political Economy and Security specialising in Southeast Asia.

Hervé has an MSc in Global Governance and Diplomacy from the University of Oxford, and an MA with first-class honours in International Relations and Modern History from the University of St Andrews.

His commentary and analysis have appeared in a number of media outlets and publications, including the BBC, Bloomberg, CNN, Financial Times, Foreign Policy, The Straits Times, South China Morning Post, and Nikkei Asian Review.

What are the global risks in 2020?

Following three years of sold-out events, AICD and Marsh are pleased to once again be partnering to launch the World Economic Forum’s Global Risks Report.

The report which is delivered at the annual summit in Davos-Klosters offers unique results from the Global Risks Perception Survey in which experts and key decision makers from across the globe, present a collective view and assess the significant risks facing the world today.

Richard Smith-Bingham, Director, Emerging Risks, Marsh & McLennan Advantage, Insights will present the report and engage in a thorough discussion on how the risks could impact your organisation and how to mitigate the threats.

The 2020 edition of the report brings forth a variety of potential disruptions and vulnerabilities that are top of mind.

This event presents the opportunity for our members to be informed, ask questions through a facilitated Q&A session and network.

A copy of the Global Risk Report will be available to download post event.
