Participants should have foundation level knowledge in governance prior to enrolling in this program.

Participants may choose to complete Governance Foundations for Not-for-Profit Directors, Foundations of Directorship or the Company Directors Course as preparation for attending this program.

What will you learn?

This short course covers key aspects of not-for-profit directorship, including developing and implementing effective strategy, boardroom best practice and organisational performance.

Upon completion of this course you will be able to:

  • Articulate the relationship and differences between board dynamics, board culture and governance culture.

  • Analyse the impact of board dynamics on the governance culture of organisations.

  • Evaluate the impact on organisational culture of the governance culture established by the board.

  • Employ techniques for developing a healthy board dynamic and the establishment of a positive governance culture.

  • Apply processes, tools and frameworks to address the negative impacts, and enhance the positive impacts, that board dynamics has upon governance culture.

  • Examine the features of the NFP environment that affect the role and performance of the NFP director.

  • Critically evaluate the role of directors of NFP boards in driving performance, resilience and sustainability.

  • Relate the current challenges facing the board in driving the development of an enduring organisation able to effectively fulfill its purpose.

  • Identify and analyse significant strategic issues facing the board that will impact the sustainability and success of the organisation.

  • Apply techniques for monitoring the organisation’s performance.
Course expectations

What can you expect?

Over two days you will undertake interactive working sessions facilitated by practising not-for-profit directors. This short course is a great opportunity to discuss specific issues with your facilitator and network with like-minded directors. 

Advanced Not-for-Profit Governance consists of two full-day courses: 

Day 1: Driving and Monitoring Not-for-Profit Performance

Develop an understanding of key strategic considerations for boards in enhancing the sustainability of the NFP organisation. This includes an exploration of current issues relevant to NFP organisations and the challenges these present for directors in fulfilling their fiduciary and statutory duties

Day 2:Not-for-Profit Board Dynamics and Culture

Identify and apply tools and frameworks for improving board dynamics and internal culture for better board decision-making and enhanced board performance, with a view to better organisational performance.

Mode of study

Group discussions and interactive working sessions will be facilitated by practising not-for-profit directors from a range of organisations.
