Participants include executive and non-executive directors, CEOs and senior executives who report to boards. It is recommended that participants have completed the Foundations of Directorship program or have equivalent professional experience before enrolling.

What will you learn?

In a highly focused and interactive setting, The Residential Company Directors Course will teach participants the roles and duties of board directors.

The course includes topics on the legal environment, the director mindset, strategy and risk, financial performance, decision making, board and organisational culture, board dynamics and measuring board effectiveness.

Upon completion of this course you will have an understanding of:

  • The duties of directors, the legal environment in which they operate and the function and responsibilities of the board

  • Contemporary issues facing boards and relevant frameworks and tools to help boards govern effectively

  • The board’s role in developing and executing strategy, overseeing risk, and developing and monitoring culture

  • How to analyse financial reports and financial performance and the levers available to the board in driving organisational performance

  • Board dynamics, how to improve board effectiveness, and how a constructive board culture can create value for an organisation

Through experiential learning activities including in-depth case studies and the sharing of professional experiences with peers, participants will also gain an understanding of how to apply learnings to their own circumstances.

What can you expect?

Over five days of focused learning with your peers from across Australia, you will develop your director skills by exploring case studies brought to life by video content and participating in interactive workshops on the issues and challenges that directors face.

You will embark on interactive working sessions through relevant case studies brought to life with video to apply and reinforce your knowledge. The interaction during sessions and dinners enables the sharing of valuable insights and practices, and allows you to discuss the application of the tools and resources introduced during the course.

The Company Directors Course comprises specific topics, chosen to enhance your learning. You will explore the role of the board and the practice of directorship, as well as sound decision making. You will have the opportunity to understand the duties and responsibilities of directors and upskill your financial literacy. You will dedicate time to studying how the board examines risk, executes strategy and learn the board's legal environment. Upon completion, you will understand how to drive financial performance and increase board effectiveness. You will also be able to put your learning into practice through a simulated board meeting.

There is approximately 60-80 hours of pre-reading required before the course commences. It is strongly recommended that you also complete the two complimentary eLearning courses (Interpreting Financial Statements and The Director Mindset) before the course takes place.

    Assessment award

    Assessment and recognition

    Graduates may attain the Company Director Course award.

    To do so, you will need to successfully complete the optional assessment. On successful completion of the Company Directors Course, financial members may be eligible to use the GAICD graduate post nominal. The assessment needs to be completed if you are planning to use the course to gain advanced standing in an MBA program.

    You will accrue 50 DPD units for completing the course, and an additional 10 DPD units for successfully completing the assessment.
