Success on the field starts in the boardroom. Leading sports organisations not only need to play by the rules, they need to be the models of effective governance. The Sports Governance short course will help directors navigate the unique governance challenges they are confronted with in the sporting world.

The course provides participants with an understanding of the fundamental roles and responsibilities of the boards of sporting organisations, both in terms of compliance and performance, specifically in the areas of governance, financial performance, strategy and risk.

Who Should attend?

This program is suitable for:

  • Those looking to join the board of a sporting organisation
  • Executives or management who report to a board
  • Directors looking to transition into a sports directorship
  • Directors of sports clubs or peak sporting bodies

How will I benefit?

Upon completion of the Sports Governance program, you will be able to:

  • Identify the key duties and responsibilities of directors in a sports context
  • Appreciate the potential personal liability of directors
  • Understand the governance structures that are in place, or should be, at a sports organisation
  • Consider the differences and similarities of the director’s role in the sports context compared to other organisation
  • Understand the role of directors in overseeing the strategy formulation and risk management approach of the organisation
  • Review financial statements of the sporting organisation
  • Understand the link between governance, financial performance, strategy and success on the field

How it works

The program has four half-day sessions.

Session 1 – The Role of the Director and the Board

This session introduces the role of the director and the board in establishing the governance of a sporting organisation. It outlines the duties, responsibilities and the rights of directors of sporting organisations. The roles of various regulatory bodies are also discussed, including federated sporting structures.

Session 2 – Introduction to Financial Statements for Directors

This session defines and explains the most important items contained in the balance sheet, income statement and statement of cash flow, before exploring how these statements relate to each other. Participants are then introduced to directors’ statutory duties with respect to accounting records, financial statements and reports, audit requirements and ASX corporate governance guidelines.

Session 3 – Introduction to the Strategic Role of the Director

This session explains the terminology of strategy as it applies to directors of sporting organisations, and clarifies the respective roles of the board and management in developing strategies. Participants are provided examples of what should be in a sporting organisation’s strategic plan and will develop skills to lead their sporting organisation’s planning processes. The session also introduces key principles for measuring and evaluating strategic progress indicators.

Session 4 – Risk: Issues for Directors

This session provides an introduction to the director’s role and the board’s responsibility in risk oversight and monitoring in sporting organisations. Participants are introduced to the language of risk and develop a stepped approach to risk assessment and management for directors of sporting organisations. The session also creates awareness of personal risk appetite and of how this can affect board decisions.
